Excursion South Crete

Festos

Through th rich vineyards of Malevesi province and a short stop for coffee in a lovely area, we will continue towards the largest plain of Crete, the Messera plain. First stop is the city of Gortys, an important Greek Roman town where archaelogists have unearthed the evidence of a complex judicial system of the city, with laws pertaining to marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption etc. Dating 500 BC. and written in the Cretan Doric language. Next stop will be the Minoan palaca of Pheastos. It is an important minoan center contemporary to Knossos with beautiful architecture and impressive structure. Here, the famous Pheastos disc was found. This disk itself represents one of the world's mysteries since the clay the disk was made of can not be found in Crete and the language which is impressed on both sides in a circular manner, is still unknown.

Matala beach

Leaving Pheastos behind we travel to the short distance to the coastal village of Matala. Matala is famous for the man made caves and their past for being the hippy doom center of the 60's and 70's. In Matala you will have time of to swim in the beautifull bay and also have a drink or a bite to eat.
