Besides Heraklion, Fodele is also close to Agia Pelagia. You drive on the national road towards Rethymnon. After about 8 km, there is an exit to Fodele. Fodele was the birthplace of El Greco, the famous painter. His real name was Theotokopoulos, but during his stay in Spain, he was given the nickname of El Greco (The Greek). Fodele is nicely situated and surrounded by plenty of green and water. On the town's square there is a statue in memory of El Greco. It is a cosy small village with a number of shops and some nice taverns.
